As Henry Rollins and William Shatner once sang, I cant get behind that. The problem I have with Cage, that Ive always had with him, is that apart from a couple of decent performances (Leaving Las Vegas, Bringing Out The Dead) he always appears to play the same character: wide-eyed, drawling speech, terrible haircut (surely he has the worst collection of hairdos in modern cinema?) and seemingly devoid of emotion. The thought of him starring as a lecturer-cum-action hero just beggars belief, but this trailer for Knowing gives it a damn good try. And its a shame, because with someone like Will Smith in the role (the director is I Robots Alex Proyas, so they have history) I think I would be looking forward to this spooky sci-fi tale of apocalyptic visions and end-of-the-world predictions. The effects look the part and glimpses of the whisper people are genuinely creepy. When the emergency broadcast kicks in, complete with buzzing siren, you get a real sense that this could be 2009s darkest, broodiest film.
