Celebrity Poker: Sacha Baron Cohen

<!– @page margin: 0.79in P margin-bottom: 0.08in –>

Celebrities donned their poker faces at a celebrity poker tournament to raise funds for a notable organizations and foundations one of the Hollwood’s A-list celebrity star is the funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen. As a former male model who stands at 6′ 3″, Sacha Baron Cohen likely attracted the occasional female eye before he found fame.

We call him a comedian because he makes us laugh, but Sacha Baron Cohen is not a comedian, any more than the alter-egos that have made him famous — Ali G, Borat and Bruno. Now, he’s married to Isla Fisher, the super hot redhead and a hilariously talented actress, and together they have a daughter. Aside from PR stunts to promote his films, Sacha Baron Cohen is rarely seen in public and has rarely given a straight interview.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s work has earned him nominations from several film and television organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. He has received nominations for an Oscar, for Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Emmys, and many more, even winning one or two along the way. In addition to his own films, Cohen has voiced the role of Julien in the movie Madagascar in 2008 films and appeared alongside Will Ferrell in flicks like Talladega Nights in 20006.

He has already made millions in his field and has established a bar for fearlessness in film that seems unbelievably high. The question remains, however, of whether or not he can escape the shadows cast by his alter egos and establish an acting career independent of them.

Out of college, Sacha Baron Cohen decided to pursue a career doing what he truly loved but rarely did in an official capacity — entertain. Specifically, do comedy. Perhaps his Orthodox upbringing, or his years as a diligent student, made him believe it wasn’t the most noble of pursuits, so he set a five-year deadline for himself — if it didn’t work out in that time, he would find a job more suited to his education. His five years were almost up when Channel 4 gave him that all-important break.

When Channel 4′s The 11 O’Clock Show needed a host, Cohen auditioned — rather, Ali G auditioned, in all his foul-mouthed arrogance. His persona landed the spot as host of the show’s “Voice of Youth” segment. It didn’t take long for the segment to catch fire, and shortly Ali G was given his own show, Da Ali G Show. Displaying his keen PR sense, before it debuted Cohen cranked up the buzz by releasing a video, Ali G, Innit. A best-seller, the video had fans in a frenzy for the debut. He stoked the fire by releasing two more videos, and in 2002, a full-length feature, Ali G Indahouse.

In 2007, Sacha Baron Cohen released Borat: Cultural Learnings from America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, which pretended to follow the hapless Borat across the U.S. looking for the love of his life, Pamela Anderson. The film was a sensation, grossing 1 million over 14 times its cost, and earning Sacha Baron Cohen an Oscar and a host of legal problems.

Specifically, he was sued by an etiquette coach, a driving instructor, southern frat boys, some Romanian villagers, even a Manhattan businessman whose personal space Borat violated, causing the man to scamper away. All appeared in the movie after unwittingly falling for Borat’s ruse, and none liked what they saw of themselves

In late 2008, Sacha Baron Cohen publicly announced that he was killing off Borat and Ali G — their enormous fame had subverted their effectiveness. By then, he’d finished filming the mockumentary Bruno, released in early July 2009. The film presents the same sucker scenarios that elevated Borat and uses the same underhanded scheme: feed on his prey’s weaknesses and exploit them for effect. In one scene, Paula Abdul is lured to an interview with Bruno after having been informed that she’d been named Artist of the Year in Austria.

It’s hard, for us in the audience, to believe that someone like Abdul, who had done little to nothing artistically, could accept without question that she was deserving of the award. Yet as Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s traps remain as simple as they are cunning, baiting his prey to drop their guard and to confuse the roles of predator and prey. The result is comedic genius from an otherwise unfunny and deadly serious artist.

Celebrity Poker Player: Cheryl Hines

Poker has taken off and the number of celebrities who have taken up the game has mirrored that rise in interest. And television can’t get enough! With shows like Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown, Celebrity Poker Club, Ultimate Poker Showdown, and World Poker Tour and etc.

Few women have made as large a mark on the world of female poker players and one them is this actress and celebrity poker player most famous for her role as Cheryl David on the HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, Cheryl Hines. Hines also became well-known in card-playing circles for her role as the trash-talking poker pro in The Grand.

She went to 3 different colleges before graduating with a degree in film and TV production. As it turned out she didn’t need to spend all that tuition, because her real education started when she moved to Los Angeles and joined the renowned improv comedy group, The Groundlings. Some of her fellow alumni include Will Ferrell, Phil Hartman, as well as Lisa Kudrow, who was one of Cheryl’s instructors.

As a Groundling, Cheryl improvised comedy sketches in front of live audiences. It was the perfect proving ground when she became a cast member on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Since none of the shows are scripted, Cheryl makes up her dialogue on-the-fly while the cameras roll. In 2006, she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Cheryl Hines also won the first round of Calvin Ayre Wild Card Poker, defeating noted pros such as Erick Lindgren and Humberto Brenes. In 2006, Hines participated in the Pro-Am Poker Equalizer, and she has also competed in the Ladies’ World Championship at the WSOP.

Besides her TV work, Cheryl has appeared in the movies Along Came Polly, Keeping Up with the Steins, and RV. In 2007, she appeared in The Grand, an improvised comedy about a poker tournament at the Golden Nugget. Her co-stars include Ray Romano, Jason Alexander and Woody Harrelson and poker greats such as Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Phil Laak.

While Cheryl Hines has played poker for years, she wouldn’t get to put her talents on display until the last few years. And when she appeared on Celebrity Poker Showdown, Cheryl won her tournament, beating know-it-all Alex Trebek during heads-up play. Ask her about the victory, and she’ll tell you the tournament played out as though it was scripted that way.

In Logan Hill’s interview with Cheryl Hines about her poker career:

You’re a certified celebrity-poker champ. You once kicked Alex Trebek’s butt.
Yeah. At my first tournament, about four years ago, I got four twos. Now I have a poker problem. I do win every so often, so that’s what keeps me going.

You love to trash-talk. How calculated is it?
I do have a tendency to talk a lot at the poker table, which throws people off because they spend a lot of time trying to read me. But I talk a lot when I have a good hand and when I have a bad hand, too. Sometimes it annoys people so much they can’t wait to get out of the tournament. And that can only be good for me.

Was Jose Canseco upset when you beat him?
Jose Canseco may have been one that was really not pleased … But the poker pros are the ones that really may not enjoy me as much, the ones who’d rather sit in silence calculating odds.

Off set, who was the most hopeless player?
He won’t mind me saying, but Chris Parnell had not really played poker before this movie.

But his character is an expert.
Yes, so he was very stressed during the whole movie.

And who was the best player?
Well, it’s hard to say. I may have won a tournament … I’m not going to lie.

How much did you walk away with on side bets?
0.

That’s not bad for an indie film. What was the hardest scene to keep a straight face in?
When Werner Herzog goes crazy and starts to attack Chris Parnell, and Chris jumps up on the chair and starts squawking like a bird. Is that still in there?

Yes.
Oh, good.

What’s a line that will help an amateur poker player win?
Whenever somebody folds, say, “Good laydown.” It encourages them to fold on a later hand because it makes them feel like you had the best hand even if you were bluffing. It’s an odd form of flattery that seems to work at the poker table.

You’re a natural underminer.
Manipulating people is what’s so fun about poker. I love that you can just look into someone’s eyes and lie—and it’s perfectly acceptable.

I guess acting and poker are two of the only times it is.
Yes, but when you’re playing poker, you can drink beer while you do it.

Celebrity Poker Player: Jennifer Tilly

As an actress Jennifer Tilly vamped it up in the movie Liar, Liar, screamed it up as the Bride of Chucky, a wildly successful computer-animated film Monsters Inc., and landed more than a few cameo roles in Marvel comic books and as a voice over character on the Family Guy cartoon series and movie Stuart Little. An Academy Award nominee for Bullets Over Broadway in 1994. And now, a celebrity poker champion!

Jennifer Tilly has made impressive showings in a variety of prominent poker tournaments.

Tilly came to poker through acting: Her role in Let It Ride in 1989 sparked an interest, and shortly after making the film, Tilly began playing regularly at home with friends. In 2003, Tilly, who had already started dating Phil Laak, entered a few tournaments, her boyfriend ‘s wheedle and her poker fame took off.

Jennifer Tilly has asserted 2 championship bracelets in the year 2005, a World Series Of Poker Women’s No Limit Hold’em Tournament outlasting 600 other players and the World Poker Tour Ladies Night III held at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles . Only Tilly in the history as a female poker player has accomplished these 2 feats in the same year!

Her playing style is an almost extraordinary aggressive on, taking absolutely any and every opportunity to put her opponents’ to the test by applying continual pressure that makes it difficult for them to proceed. She has been known to play literally any 2 cards from any position, even in spots where some of her equally aggressive contemporaries would dodge. Though criticized in some venues for almost going overboard with the concept, clearly her application has paid off in its own way.

Tilly has since placed in numerous events including World Poker Tournament Season 6, L.A. Poker Classic. She has also appeared on the GSN Poker Royale series, Poker Superstars and Celebrity Poker Showdown. Despite her obvious skill at the game, Tilly continues to be billed as a celebrity player rather than an expert; however that could change given a little more time, opportunity and hands.

Tilly’s appearances on the World Poker Tour, Poker After Dark, and other such reputable venues have demonstrated her ability to play.

On the interview in about.com on Jennifer Tilly,

Jennifer Tilly’s on Whether She’s a Poker Pro:

After winning at the World Series of Poker, Tilly said this to Jay Leno:

“I won two thousand dollars more than Phil Laak and I won a gold bracelet. I’m not rubbing it in…but I think that that makes me a professional poker player, I don’t care what the other poker players say.” Jennifer Tilly said.

Jennifer Tilly on Winning the World Poker Tour Ladies Night:

“I felt like I was suffering from the ‘impostor syndrome, I had these niggling self-doubts. But now I know I can really play. These women were extremely tough pros with blood lust at the poker table. My goal has always been to win a World Poker Tour event and now I’ve done it!” said Jennifer Tilly.

With such an energetic character as Phil Laak-her boyfriend and a poker coach Tilly’s own superb resume of good work and uniqueness, with 2 poker tournament championships and the poker fever that has seized the globe at an all-time high, it is certain Jennifer Tilly will be delighting fellow players and TV viewers with her poker game for years to come.

Celebrity Poker Player: Tiffany Michelle

As old as time could tell, women have always fallen prey into stereotypes and typecast shadows of misconception. They are cast in a shell, where they’re perceived to be weak, emotional, and just as soft as their feminine instincts could be. Although physical strength is not one of their best attributes, little do people realize that they are actually smarter and a lot stronger than they seem.

So even if poker have always been dominated by men as masters of their own tricks and games, breaking into this new trend and market was no surprise at all for female poker players. However, only recently did women truly became formidable figures in the poker circuit. At a time when poker is starting to go public and is becoming more popular through backrooms and later, through live tournaments and through online, women have always been fascinated by this game.

However, they are restricted mostly to home games, which have also been common grounds even for famous celebrity female poker celebrities like Tiffany Michelle: a poker player and commentator, actress, singer and even certified massage therapist – there seems to be nothing she can’t do. Michelle made headlines for being the last woman standing in the 2008 World Series of Poker Tournament Main Event however, she was busted to 17th place and take part as a sponsor for Ultimate Bet.

Tiffany has quickly become a hot commodity in the poker industry. She first played the game as a kid when her brother and grandfather taught her how to play. She caught the poker bug and started playing more, eventually winning her first Vegas poker tourney. Tiffany Michelle was spotted and recruited for the Bombshell Poker Team and soon afterwards she started reporting for Bluff Radio covering the 2006 Worlsd Series Of Poker. Ever since she has been traveling the circuit reporting for Poker News and Bluff.

After that she became an on-camera host for Poker News and covered the World Series of Poker, the World Poker Tour, European Poker Tour Grand Final, and the World Series of Poker Europe. While she worked as a host for PokerNews, she continued to play online, in Los Angeles, and at various tournaments. She even appeared during the 4th season of GSN’s The World Series of Blackjack.

In 2008, Tiffany gained instant fame and notoriety at the 2008 World Series of Poker. At the ,000 No Limit Texas Hold’Em main event, Tiffany was looking like she might make history. The field was a staggering 6,844 competitors. Tiffany fought her way through and by the seventh day was in third place in chips with only 27 players remaining. She was the last woman standing and many hoped she would become the first woman to win a WSOP Main Event. It wasn’t in the cards and Tiffany busted out in 17th place. She took home 4,534 and a great deal of attention.

Poker Controversy

Tiffany Michelle drew some controversy and criticism from her World Series Of Poker show up. PokerStars had paid for her buy-in into the main event and for the first few days of the event, she wore clothing displaying the PokerNews logo. Before the final day of the event, after she started to gain media attention for her performance, she was approached by and made a deal with UltimateBet.com, whose logo suddenly appeared on her gear.

After she busted out, PokerNews accused her of selling out and failing to represent the company that paid for her buy-in. Tiffany claimed that even though they provided her entry fee, there was no exclusive contract. The matter is currently being investigated by the Kahnawake Gaming Commision.

Interview With The “Hot Chips”

Let me give some snippets in the PKR GRL interview with Tiffany Michelle:

Getting Into Poker

PKR GRL: Why and how did you get into Poker?

Tiffany M: “I grew up playing a lot of card games with my family and I can remember sitting around with my grandfather and brothers playing Five-Card Draw. I discovered Texas Hold ’Em when I was acting and would receive invites to play in Hollywood house games. I began playing a weekly game with Zach Levi and Joel David Moore and that’s really where I discovered that I had a natural instinct for the game. I was introduced to the professional world of poker when I spent the summer in Vegas in 2006 doing the On-Air hosting for Bluff Magazine’s coverage on Sirius Satellite Radio. ”

Experiences From The World Series OF Poker 2008

PKR GRL: What kinds of opportunities has the fame from your poker success brought you?

Tiffany M: “I was already involved in the Entertainment industry/Hollywood side of things before my run at the WSOP so nothing has changed too dramatically. There’s just a higher volume of invitations and opportunities whether for interviews, press, photo shoots, sporting events or celebrity fundraisers.

I’m receiving more offers to be involved in television shows and projects. I guess on a very basic level fame brings the opportunity to make more money in every avenue.”

The World Series OF Poker 2009

PKR GRL: The odds makers are saying that Tom Dwan and Tiffany Michelle are 9/2 to be the winningest pair at the 2009 WSOP. How do you fancy your chances this year? And how cool is it for bookies to be predicting your success?

Tiffany M: “Well now talk about pressure. It’s a whole new ballgame when someone has money riding on you! I’m optimistic about my chances this year and I feel like my tournament game is in a really good place but I also know that just by the sheer numbers at the WSOP there is a lot of variance you have to fade.”

Women In Poker-Perspective

PKR GRL: Can you give us a little insight into what it’s like being inside the head of a poker girl when you’re typically playing with 9 poker guys?

Tiffany M: “I don’t imagine being inside my head (as a female) is any different than being inside a guy’s head. When you sit down at the table, whether man or woman we’re all playing the same game. So as a player we’re probably considering the same elements. ”

PKR GRL: Do you think your sexuality creates an advantage at the poker table?

Tiffany M: “I don’t think that simply being a female is an advantage because, let’s be honest there isn’t this huge percentage of successful female players. However, if you can understand how men play against women and the preconceived notions they have about women players and not only exploit that but back it up with a solid game then yes, I think that is the advantage. ”

This is the moment of her climb, both as poker player and poker star, and it’s one that might signal a change in poker’s direction.

Celebrity Poker Player: Amy Poehler

Poker is hot and poker players are now huge celebrities. And even Hollywood could not resist the influence as more and more stars are going to the poker tables.

Celebrity poker players are now common sight in major poker tournaments like the World Series OF Poker and World Poker Tour. Some of them even finish in the money!

The TV business, as always, didn’t fail to notice the connection between poker and ratings. ESPN airs WSOP final table tourneys, the Travel Channel has World Poker Tour and on the mainstream primetime viewing the Bravo Channel has Celebrity Poker Showdown.

Just like these Emmy Award nominee Amy Poehler stars as mid-level bureaucrat Leslie Knope on NBC’s comedy “Parks and Recreation.”

Amy Poehler received her first Emmy nomination in 2008 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on “Saturday Night Live.” Due to a change in eligibility, this is an unprecedented nomination, making Amy Poehler the first performer in “Saturday Night Live” history to land a spot in this category.

Her move to Saturday Night Live seemed like a natural progression of her promising, young career. Besides her current status with Saturday Night Live, Poehler has also appeared in a score of movies, made cameos on a number of television shows, and even voiced a character for the cartoon hit Sponge Bob Square Pants and The Simpsons.

Amy Poehler has also contributed memorable impressions of Kelly Ripa, Sharon Osborne, Avril Lavigne, even Senator Hillary Clinton, Sharon Stone and Michael Jackson and Paula Abdul.

Among her many talents, Amy is apparently a fairly competent poker player. In 2004 she appeared in the 5th game of the 3rd tournament of Celebrity Poker Showdown. She did not win in this particular instance (losing to fellow SNL cast member Seth Meyers), but Amy did make a fairly good showing for herself.

While Amy may not have given her best performance during her appearance on Celebrity Poker Showdown, she still played well – hell, she took out Hank Azaria with a flush.

Poker has traditionally been a man’s game, but recently there have been several women who have taken the game by storm – and take home the big pot.

There is a considerable new currency in poker world – female celebrity poker players. Part of the means of attracting this oft ignored demographic lies in what we are now seeing on our T.V. Screens.

Amy is a very funny lady whose poker skills are no joke. They aren’t just some of the best women poker players in the world – they’re some of the best, period. Just remember that the next time you think that young lady across the tournament table from you is going to be a pushover.

No matter what the future of poker, one thing is certain – wanted or not, women have a seat at the table and there’s nothing anyone can do about that. As to whether every seat should be filled by a woman, only time will tell what happens to women-only poker tournaments.

Celebrity Poker Player: Lauren Graham

Anytime any type of poker room or casino can get a celebrity to show up and play a few rounds, it is considered to be good public relations and brings in the crowds from all around.

Some celebrity poker players are better than others, of course, but everyone loves watching their favorite TV star or movie actor laying down a low pair with glee and certainty, only to bust.

And another celebrity not only hits the movie scene but also tho the poker tables. Lauren Graham is anything but just another pretty face. She is also fierce poker player, and if you need more proof just ask all the other celebrities she took out at the Celebrity Poker Showdown. She took out Chris Masterson to win game four, and was finally taken out by Maura Tierney to end up coming in second in the championship.

Graham, along with being a terrific actress, is also an avid poker player. She successfully won game four of the Celebrity Poker Showdown, and went on to take second place in the final tournament.

Lauren discovered acting while in elementary school. She began acting in community theatre and any other production she could find. She traveled extensively with her father while growing up. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Barnard College in New York City.

In addition to her many guest starring and co-starring roles on prime time TV, she had three starring roles on failed sitcoms including Townies with Molly Ringwald and Jenna Elfman – before landing the lead role of Lorelai Gilmore on the CW’s Gilmore Girls (2000-present), for which she is best known.

Celebrity Poker Player: Sarah Silverman

Female poker players are not a new phenomenon; Let’s face it, over the recent years poker has become a phenomenon driving people crazy all over the world.

Many poker enthusiasts would tell you that poker is not just a game of luck, but a real sport requiring its followers to develop certain intellectual skills and capacities.

Funny, irreverent, fearless, hardcore: all were used at one time or another to describe actress and bawdy comedienne Sarah Silverman and her unremitting style of humor.

Silverman’s first career break was as a writer on Saturday Night Live during the 1993-94 season, but none of her satirical sketches were aired. She later had a featured role in HBO’s comedy show “Mr. Show with Bob and David”, and a guest appearance in a two-part episode of “Star Trek: Voyager”. Appeared in several movies including “There’s Something About Mary” with Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz and “The School of Rock” with Jack Black and Joan Cusack.

Sarah Silverman’s career as a poker player started with her premier appearances on the popular Celebrity Poker Showdown, appearing on two shows. The first show she played against poker celebrity Shannon Elizabeth, and in her second appearance against Hollywood’s celebrities Matthew Perry, and Christopher Meloni. Her poker dexterity were good, her sense of humor at the table greater, but neither were able to carry her to the Final Table of either show.

Sarah Silverman has appeared on Celebrity Poker Showdown – and she played quite well – though she lost both times. Sarah is an avid poker player, though: don’t let the loss fool you. In fact, she’s in a regular game with Paul Rudd, the guy that knocked her out of the Celebrity Poker Showdown game.

At the end of her run on Celebrity Poker Showdown, Sarah Silverman climbed at the top of the poker table and begged the dealer for a helping river. The dealer burned and turned the river into the small of her back. Shortly thereafter in the Loser’s Lounge interview:

Dave Foley said, “And there was a river flowing down the small of your back.”

Sarah quickly replied with “Yeah, if I only had a nickel…”

So, it is no wonder that a wide variety of Hollywood celebrities, world class super models and notable sportsmen alike, have gladly embraced poker as well. We believe that the game of poker is not only very exciting, but is also highly glamorous and challenging. And, celebrities are always attracted to glamor and challenge of poker!
